We had the chance to try out TypeCaster at IGDX 2025, a fresh take on action RPGs that turns typing into the core of combat. In this 2.5D action game, you don’t click or press buttons to cast spells—you type them out. This unique mechanic means that fast, accurate fingers are just as important as quick reflexes when facing monsters in the Tower of Trials.
The game follows a cursed thief who must climb the tower to break their curse before time runs out. Along the way, you’ll encounter various enemies and bosses, each floor presenting new challenges and environments to explore. The typing-to-cast system keeps the pressure on throughout, as every spell requires precise keystrokes to work.

The Typing Mechanic in Action
The spell system is straightforward but demanding. When you learn new spells, you can equip them to use in combat. Here’s where it gets interesting: stronger spells have longer text that you need to type out. This means more powerful magic requires more accurate typing—getting even one letter wrong during a spell cast leaves you vulnerable. There’s no backspace option during combat, so mistakes have real consequences. This creates a high-stakes system where typing accuracy directly impacts your survival.

What You’ll Find in the Tower
Beyond fighting monsters, TypeCaster includes treasure hunting, equipment drops, and various magical items to collect. The game features multiple magic spells to discover, potions to aid you in battle, and gear to equip as you progress. Each floor of the tower brings new environments and tougher challenges, keeping the experience fresh as you climb higher.

The Overall Experience
TypeCaster combines skill-based typing gameplay with narrative depth and original soundtracks. The game is designed to challenge both your reflexes and your typing ability, making it a unique entry in the indie gaming scene. It’s a straightforward experience that doesn’t overcomplicate things—you know what you’re getting: typing-based combat in a tower-climbing adventure.
