Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched as the long-awaited follow-up to the original series, carrying forward the world and combat style that fans have followed for years. Since release, the team behind the game has kept adding updates based on player feedback, while also working on a bigger addition to the game in the form of the Dark Arisen expansion.
To learn more about how Dark Arisen came together, we had the chance to hear from the people leading its development. Director Kento Kinoshita, who also directed the original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, returns to lead this new expansion, giving him a direct connection to the tone and difficulty players remember from that earlier release. Joining him was producer Naoto Oyama, who have been guiding the Dragon’s Dogma 2 project as a whole, including how player feedback gets turned into real changes. Together, they talked us through the thinking behind the expansion’s name, its new setting, and what players can expect from it.

Why Bring Back the Dark Arisen Name
One of the first things fans noticed about the expansion was its title. Since “Dark Arisen” already means something specific to people who played the original game, we asked why the team chose to reuse it instead of coming up with something new.
According to Kinoshita, the name wasn’t something the team started with. “The project was not developed with the name ‘Dark Arisen’ in mind from the outset,” he said.
“Rather, as we explored what kind of expansion would be most appropriate for Dragon’s Dogma 2, we found that the name ‘Dark Arisen’ was the most fitting, and it was ultimately adopted as the title.”
Oyama added that the name fit naturally once the content took shape. “In particular, we felt the name aligned well with the game’s narrative, as well as the loot-based Relic Expedition Cycle gameplay elements reminiscent of the original Dark Arisen,” he explained.
“It also conveys these new additions to players in a clear and familiar way.”

Content and Technical Goals
Dragon’s Dogma 2 has received several free quality-of-life updates since launch, including six new equippable weapon skills. With Dark Arisen now arriving as paid content, we asked how the team decides what feedback becomes a free update and what becomes part of the expansion.
Oyama laid out the reasoning behind that split. “Our approach is based on a simple principle: improvements and adjustments to content we’ve already delivered should be provided free of charge, while we offer new content that players haven’t experienced yet as paid content,” he said.
Kinoshita then described what forms the heart of the expansion itself. “The core gameplay experience in Dark Arisen is bringing the loot-based Relic Expedition Cycle gameplay loop into an open-world setting,” he said.
“Alongside that core experience, we also hope players will look forward to the all-new story that unfolds in Norgan, the new area.”

Since Dragon’s Dogma 2 first launched, performance has been a frequent topic among players, especially on consoles. We asked what technical work is being done alongside the expansion.
Kinoshita confirmed that console performance is a focus area. “On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game is being optimized to run at 60 FPS in Performance Mode,” he said. For PC players, Oyama noted that more information is still to come. “As PC hardware specifications vary significantly, we’ll share more details about the PC version, including any updates to the system requirements, at a later date,” he said.
Norgan: A New Region North of Vernworth
The expansion introduces Norgan, a snowy region that stands apart from the base game’s setting. We asked what led the team to this particular location, and how it fits alongside the story players already know.
Kinoshita explained that the goal was to offer something that felt clearly different from the base game. “The biggest reason we chose to set the expansion in the far northern land ‘Norgan’ was to create a gameplay experience that feels distinctly different from the base game,” he said. “We heard from many players who wanted to spend more time exploring and fighting in the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and we felt that amongst that sentiment was a desire to experience a new region within the same world.”
He also shared where the idea for Norgan first came from. “If you look north from Vernworth in the base game, you can see snow-covered mountains in the distance,” he said.
“That sparked the idea: ‘Wouldn’t it be exciting if players could actually travel beyond those mountains?’ Norgan was born from that concept.”

Kinoshita then clarified how the expansion connects to the main story. He noted that the main story refers to Dragon’s Dogma 2’s core campaign, while the standalone endgame challenge refers to the twelve dungeons known as “Lost Rites.” At a point that most players are likely to reach during the main story, they will be able to pick up a quest that opens the path to the Dark Arisen content.
He also pointed out that players have some freedom in how they approach it. “Both the quest leading to Norgan and the quests associated with the twelve dungeons have recommended levels, but players are free to tackle the Dark Arisen challenges whenever they choose as they progress through the main story,” he said.
“On the other hand, if players want to venture into Norgan at a much lower level, they’re free to do so as well. We wanted to give players the flexibility to decide how they balance their progression between the main campaign and the Dark Arisen content based on their own playstyle.”

With these details now shared, players have a clearer picture of what Dark Arisen aims to deliver, from its ties to the original expansion’s name, to the new region of Norgan, to the ongoing work on performance across platforms.
