Japanese outlet Inside Games has shared a large batch of new gameplay footage for Kyoto Xanadu, the upcoming JRPG from Falcom. The clips cover a wide range of content, including 2D and 3D combat, dungeon exploration, a boss battle, daily town life, and the game’s card-based upgrade systems.
Kyoto Xanadu is built around two distinct gameplay halves. The first takes place in a fictionalized version of Kyoto, where players attend classes at Hirasaka Academy to build up abilities, talk to characters, and use a deck-building system tied to action cards in everyday activities.
The second half puts players inside the Labyrinth, a dungeon-like space with floors that shift between 2D and 3D perspectives. Fighting in the Labyrinth uses a system called Soul-Devices, which mixes melee attacks, ranged strikes, and special moves. Each floor also comes with its own twist based on Guardian attributes.
The game is set in Kyoto, which in this world remains Japan’s capital 1,200 years after it was historically moved. The story follows a character named Rei, who is first seen running from yakuza after stealing a large amount of money from organized crime. Before they can catch him, a mysterious otherworld suddenly appears in the middle of the city.
Rei gets pulled into this strange space and is attacked by creatures called Greed. It is during this moment that a power inside him wakes up, taking the form of twin blades. Kyoto Xanadu is set to launch on July 16, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam.
