Digimon Story: Time Stranger has launched to critical acclaim, drawing attention for its monster-collecting gameplay. Many players naturally compare it to Pokémon, but producer Ryosuke Hara hopes the game will clearly show what makes Digimon unique.

Addressing Comparisons with Pokémon
In a recent interview, Ryosuke Hara was asked about frequent comparisons between the two monster-collecting franchises. Hara acknowledged that such comparisons are natural. However, he emphasized that his team designed Time Stranger to highlight Digimon’s unique appeal.

“There are certainly similarities in monster collection, and many players enjoy both franchises,” Hara explained. “So comparisons are understandable and expected. However, Digimon and Pokémon are fundamentally different in their core concepts and appeal. Each has unique strengths. We believe players will notice these differences as they experience the game.”
Introducing Digimon to New Players
Hara added that Time Stranger aims to reach newcomers as well as existing fans. The protagonist is a secret agent who initially does not know what Digimon are. This approach introduces the lore in a way that engages all audiences.

“Simply showing powerful Digimon like the Olympos XII would only appeal to existing fans,” Hara said. “So we added mysteries at the story’s start to spark curiosity. This encourages all players to progress through the narrative.”

The game gradually explains what Digimon are and how they fit into the world. Players explore the real world first before entering the Digital World. This enhances immersion and makes the eventual transition more impactful.
Critical Reception and Legacy

Digimon Story: Time Stranger launched last month to critical acclaim. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 80/79, depending on the platform. Hara hopes the game will help more players appreciate the franchise’s identity and enjoy the world of Digimon on its own merits.
