We’re back at it again with another card preview for Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and this time, we have Slick Imitator, a unique Ooze creature that embodies the high-octane racing mechanics of the upcoming Aetherdrift set.
Slick Imitator is a fascinating blue creature that costs just 1 and a blue and brings in the new “Start your engines!” mechanic that rewards aggressive strategies and offers a powerful spell-copying ability.

Card Details:
Card Name: Slick Imitator
Cost: 1U
Creature: Ooze
Card Text:
Start your engines! (If you have no speed, it starts at 1. It increases once on each of your turns when an opponent loses life. Max speed is 4.)
Max Speed – 1, Sacrifice this creature: Copy target spell you control. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)
The card’s ability, “Start your engines,” is a speed-based progression system. Players begin at speed 1, with the potential to increase speed each turn when an opponent loses life, maxing out at speed 4. Where at max speed, players can sacrifice the Slick Imitator to copy a spell they control, with the flexibility to choose new targets. This includes the ability to turn permanent spell copies into tokens, providing significant strategic versatility.

This mechanic encourages players to apply pressure and rewards strategic life loss interactions. The spell-copying ability is particularly intriguing, offering the potential to duplicate spells which could see itself in combo decks like Storm. However, the ability cost, getting it to max speed, and the requirement to sacrifice the creature might prove steep for some constructed decks.
As part of the Aetherdrift set releasing on February 14, 2025, Slick Imitator represents the set’s innovative approach to merging racing dynamics with traditional Magic: The Gathering gameplay.
