Developer Koei Tecmo announced during Sony’s State of Play presentation that the remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly will launch on March 12, 2026 with digital pre-orders now available on the PlayStation Store.
This is a complete remake of the 2003 Japanese horror game Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (known as Project Zero II in some regions). The game follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they enter an abandoned village filled with hostile spirits. Players use the Camera Obscura, a special camera that can capture and fight supernatural entities.
Mio Amakura, the younger twin voiced by Yui Kondo, is lively and protective of her sister. She blames herself for a childhood accident where Mayu fell from a cliff and injured her leg. When both sisters end up in the cursed Minakami Village, Mio searches for a way to escape and save Mayu.
Mayu Amakura, the older twin voiced by Haruka Shiraishi, is quiet and reserved. Her injured right leg from the childhood accident limits her movement. She has a strong connection to the supernatural and becomes possessed by a spirit that draws her deeper into the village.

The remake features updated graphics, sound, and controls. Character models show detailed skin and clothing textures, while Minakami Village uses light and shadow to create a realistic yet eerie atmosphere. Spirits can appear without warning during gameplay. They may grab players when picking up items or ambush them through doorways. Players can dodge these surprise attacks with quick reactions, but failing to do so causes Spirit Power Damage and triggers combat.
A new mechanic lets players hold Mayu’s hand to restore Health and Spirit Power. When Mayu falls during dangerous moments, Mio must help her back up. This feature emphasizes the bond between the sisters throughout the story. The Camera Obscura combat system returns with new functions including focus, zoom, and filter switching. These additions give players more options during both exploration and fights against spirits.

The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the base game plus a Digital Soundtrack, Digital Art Book, and Digital Deluxe Bonus Set. The bonus set contains the Deluxe Charm, Lace Gloves in white and black, and Japanese Gothic wing accessories. Players who buy the standard edition can purchase a separate Digital Deluxe Upgrade containing the same bonus content without the base game.
