Ubisoft Says They Don’t Delete Inactive Accounts That Bought Games

Following the uproar from a viral Tweet suggesting that Ubisoft may delete inactive accounts, the publisher has provided further clarification.

In a statement to GamerBraves, Ubisoft clarified that inactive accounts that had previously purchased games will not be the target of account deletion.

The controversy started on social media when a user shared a screenshot of a Ubisoft Support email suggesting that inactive accounts may be permanently deleted.

This lead to many fans being worried that they might lose their library of games for not logging into their Ubisoft account actively.

Ubisoft Account Deletion Policy 

Ubisoft confirmed that the account deletion process is in compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

GDPR Article 5.1e details the duration companies are allowed to store individual personal information.

Publisher Ubisoft further clarified its strict criteria to account deletion, highlighting clearly that they do not include any accounts that have purchased games.

The criteria that Ubisoft takes into account to consider deleting accounts are as follows:

• The gaming activity of the account since its creation
• The account’s libraries: accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion
• The duration of inactivity of the account, meaning the last login to our ecosystem (including from Ubisoft games on Steam and other platforms)
  • In practice, as of today, we have never deleted accounts that have been inactive for less than 4 years
• The existence of an active subscription tied to the account

The email also adds that if an account is considered for deletion, 3 emails will be sent to the user over a 30-day period.

If the user attempts to log in during that 30-day window, they will receive a notice and a link to reactive the account upon login.
