Bioware has reaffirmed that the upcoming Dragon Age 4 will be a single-player experience with an emphasis on player choice and consequences.

Studio General Manager Gary McKay has written a blog post looking back at the studio’s achievements in 2021 and its general plans for 2022. When talking about Dragon Age 4, he writes:

“As for Dragon Age, we have a veteran group of talented developers working on the next iteration of the franchise. We are focused on a single-player experience that is built on choices that matter.”

While the Dragon Age series has traditionally been a single-player series, there was some dispute whether this would be the case for the latest entry. Reports say that the game was originally going to follow the live service model however after the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the failure of Anthem, Bioware convinced EA to allow them to make a fully single-player game.

It was later confirmed in February of 2021 that Dragon Age 4 would be single-player with this latest blog post is a second reaffirmation.

EA has previously stated that single-player games were finished anymore and that they would double down on the live service model which saw heavy criticism, especially following the release of the loot box-ridden Star Wars BattleFront 2. This came to a point that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order not having microtransactions was marketed as a selling point for the game.

Dragon Age 4 is currently in development for the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. It currently does not have a release date.
