A 92-year-old woman has won the championship trophy at a Tekken 8 tournament organized specifically for senior citizens in Japan. Hisako Sakai claimed victory at the 12th tournament hosted by Care, a Japanese esports association based in Mie prefecture. The event took place in November and was streamed live on the organization’s official YouTube channel.
The tournament brought together eight senior competitors who faced off in one-on-one matches of Tekken 8, the popular fighting game from Bandai Namco. The oldest participant in this tournament was 95 years old.
Care is an organization that works to “create an environment in which the elderly can casually participate in esports.” According to their official website, the group aims to promote wellbeing among older adults and help them maintain healthy and active lifestyles. The association held its first tournament back in 2019, featuring online matches of Shogi and Othello (also known as Reversi). These early events included professional-style broadcasts complete with commentators.
Tekken 8 was introduced to Care’s competitions during their 11th tournament, which took place in summer 2024. The fighting game has proven popular with the senior participants. Care currently holds tournaments twice a year across three prefectures: Mie, Aichi, and Gifu. The organization has expressed hopes to eventually expand and host a nationwide tournament in the future.
