The controversy surrounding Nvidia’s DLSS 5 has had an unexpected silver lining for Capcom. Rather than seeing the widespread criticism as a problem, producer Masato Kumazawa views it as proof that the Resident Evil Requiem team nailed the design of the game’s protagonist, Grace.
DLSS 5 was revealed in March and uses an AI model to change the visuals of supported games running on Nvidia graphics cards, adding what Nvidia describes as “photoreal lighting and materials.” The reveal was met with heavy pushback from players and industry figures who felt the technology drastically changes the original art style of the games it touches.
One of the more notable reactions was directed at how Grace looked in Nvidia’s Resident Evil Requiem demo, with many players expressing that they preferred her original appearance. Speaking to Eurogamer, Kumazawa said he actually took this as good news. “The fact a lot of players commented they really liked the original design of Grace and didn’t want to see it changed was a positive,” he said, adding that it “meant we got the design right” and that it “points to the fact that Grace quickly established herself as a fan favourite, that people had such strong opinions on her design.”
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang previously responded to the broader DLSS 5 criticism shortly after the reveal, stating that the developers of supported games had control over the final look of the effect.” DLSS 5 is set to launch this fall. Aside from Resident Evil Requiem, the confirmed list of supported games includes Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, EA Sports FC, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
