Square Enix has posted strong financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027, with growth across nearly every part of its business, according to a report from GameBiz. The company’s operating income rose 88.6% year-over-year, while net profit climbed 175.7% to ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million). Net sales for the quarter reached ¥78.4 billion ($492.3 million), up 32.3% from the same period last year.
The company credited its Digital Entertainment segment, which covers its video game business, as the main driver behind these results. Sales in this segment rose 51.8% to ¥49.9 billion ($313.3 million), while operating income grew 91.8% to ¥15.5 billion ($97.3 million). Square Enix said all three of its main game categories, HD games, MMO titles, and mobile/PC titles, showed improved performance during the quarter.

The HD Games sub-segment saw the sharpest gains. Net sales in this category nearly doubled, rising 98.8% to ¥17.7 billion ($111.1 million), while operating income jumped 510% to ¥6.1 billion ($38.2 million). Square Enix pointed to the strong launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store as a key factor. The game had previously released on PlayStation 5 in February 2024 and on Windows in January 2025. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales also contributed to sales, along with a rise in sales of older, previously released titles. Other games launched during the quarter included Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 on Switch 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story A on Switch 2, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.
In the MMO Game sub-segment, net sales rose 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion ($79.7 million), while operating income held steady at ¥3.6 billion ($22.6 million). Square Enix said this growth reflected higher player activity following the announcement of a new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. The company noted that profit growth in this category was limited due to costs tied to the expansion, which is planned for release in early 2027.

The Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment also grew, with net sales up 35.6% to ¥19.4 billion ($121.8 million) and operating income up 72.7% to ¥5.7 billion ($35.7 million). Square Enix credited this growth to strong performances from Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.
Overall unit sales for the quarter reached 7.38 million, up from 4.01 million in the same period last year. Of those, 6.65 million came from digital downloads, while 0.73 million were physical copies.
Despite the strong quarterly results, Square Enix has kept its full-year financial forecast unchanged from the guidance it issued on May 14, 2026. The company’s momentum has also extended beyond its games business, with Square Enix recently expanding its official merch store to more countries across Asia and Oceania, giving fans in the region wider access to its branded products.
