Konami officially launched Suikoden STAR LEAP in Japan last week, marking the series’ first new entry in 14 years. A global release has yet to be scheduled, though Konami has said more details will follow soon. The game has gotten off to a strong commercial start, landing within the top 10 domestic earners on both the Google and Apple app stores. Early reactions from Japanese players suggest the reception has been just as strong, with many admitting that their expectations going in were mostly beaten in a positive way.
Much of the concern ahead of launch came from the fact that STAR LEAP is a live-service title. Konami had described it as a full entry in the series with a proper place in Suikoden’s story, promising a console game-like experience. Even so, longtime fans of the series, who are used to traditional offline RPGs, were not entirely sold on the shift, especially given the addition of microtransactions and a gacha system.

Now that the game has launched, Japanese players on X and reviewers on the App Store have expressed surprise at how proper a game STAR LEAP turned out to be, though not without some complaints. On the technical side, the game has run into optimization issues, with some players on higher-performance phones reporting problems. This is something that will likely be addressed through future updates. Less likely to change is the gacha system itself, which players have called stingy, particularly the pull rate for pickup characters, which sits at 0.5 percent.
Some translated reactions from X captured a similar sentiment. One user admitted they had assumed STAR LEAP would be a gacha game that shut down within a year, and apologized for doubting a project they said was clearly made by people who love Suikoden.
#幻想水滸伝 pic.twitter.com/UsaepekUaP

Even so, players have said they did not feel much pressure to spend real money in order to get through the main story. One reviewer explained that players cannot simply push through battles by relying on high level or high rarity characters alone. Elemental affinities, skill choices, and character compatibility all come into play, and there are ways to win even with lower-rarity or lower-level units, something the reviewer said makes the game a good fit for fans of strategy games.

Many players were also surprised by how much content STAR LEAP offers for a free-to-play title, with the story and pixel art standing out as some of the most praised elements. One X user said they had played for nearly 17 hours straight and still had not finished the main story, adding that it is rare to find a mobile game that can be enjoyed fully without feeling pressured to spend money, and comparing the experience to playing a Suikoden 0. Another fan wrote that just as the story seemed to be wrapping up, a new arc began, and said they wished more mobile games launched with this much content from the start.
