Koei Tecmo and developer Team NINJA have announced that the first DLC for Nioh 3, titled Hell Rising, will release on August 19. The DLC is part of the game’s Season Pass, which also includes a second expansion called Bloody Insurrection that has yet to launch.
According to the official website, “Hell Rising” follows protagonist and shogun Takechiyo as he travels through time to a future version of Edo after meeting an unknown yokai in a dream. In this future, the future version of Takechiyo has died, ending the era of peace and allowing the Crucible to retake Edo. Takechiyo teams up with a one-eyed swordsman named Yagyu Jubei and a Spanish envoy named Rodrigo to investigate a new plot connected to Spirit Stones and an enemy holding a grudge against the shogunate.
The expansion introduces a new stage set in Edo during the Keian era of 1651. The area, once a symbol of peace under the shogunate, has become a chaotic battlefield overrun by yokai, human rebels, and foreign alchemists after being swept up by the Crucible. Two new weapon types are also being added: the Hoko & Shield and the Ninja Hoko & Shield. These weapons combine the offense of a short spear with the defense of a shield, allowing players to block with the shield while attacking with the spear, or use tactical moves such as throwing the shield at enemies.
Players will also face new, more powerful enemies, including Yagyu Jubei himself. Defeating these enemies rewards players with new equipment and Soul Cores to strengthen their characters further. A new difficulty option called the Enlightened One’s Journey is being added as well. This mode goes beyond the existing Shogun’s Journey and offers greater growth opportunities, including stronger gear, more Soul Cores, higher level caps, and higher +value caps through Soul Matching. It unlocks only after players complete the Shogun’s Journey.

Another new addition is the Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls system. This lets players build customizable battles by choosing different scroll effects to create their own challenges. Winning a scroll’s unique battle unlocks it as equipment, and continuing to win with it can earn special effects. Since enemies, stages, and rules can be mixed in many ways, the number of possible battle setups is very high, and some scrolls may offer especially valuable rewards. This mode can be played solo or with friends in multiplayer.
The DLC will also add new Guardian Spirits, skills, Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic, and Graces. Nioh 3 is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.
