Yoko Taro, the creator behind NieR and Drakengard, has issued a warning to fans about fake autographs being sold on online marketplaces. The warning came after a fan shared an image of a signed CD on Yoko Taro’s personal X account.
The creator responded directly, confirming that the signature shown was not his. The image was from a fraudulent listing on Vinted, a secondhand marketplace. The listing, which has since been deleted, showed a physical copy of the NieR Re[in]carnation Original Soundtrack being sold for over $230 which is significantly higher than its normal retail price of $29.99. The high price was based on the claim that the item was signed.
This autograph is a fake. I include small unknown features in my real autographs to prevent reselling, so I can tell when one isn’t genuine. I’ve confirmed that nearly half of the autographs being resold are actually fake, so please don’t buy them.

According to Yoko Taro, this is not an isolated case. He explained that he can identify whether an autograph is genuine because he includes small, undisclosed details in his signatures specifically to prevent reselling. Based on what he has observed, Yoko Taro estimates that nearly half of the autographs being resold online are fake.
The creator has advised fans to avoid purchasing these autographs. His message to fans was polite but clear: be cautious when considering buying signed items from online sellers. The issue of fake autographs is not unique to Yoko Taro or the gaming industry. Collectibles and memorabilia markets have long dealt with fraudulent items, particularly as online marketplaces make it easier for sellers to reach buyers worldwide.
