Jason Blundell, the game developer best known for his work on Call of Duty’s Zombies mode, has announced that he is starting a new studio called MagicFractal. The news comes shortly after Sony closed Dark Outlaw Games in March.
Dark Outlaw Games was one of several first-party PlayStation studios to shut down in recent times. Blundell had only been at the helm for about a year, after PlayStation announced in March 2025 that he would be leading the studio.
Blundell broke the news about MagicFractal during a livestream alongside JC Farmer, a former colleague from Dark Outlaw Games. Despite the announcement, details about the new studio remain thin. Its website is currently just a placeholder page with a contact form, and Blundell did not share any information about what the studio is working on during the stream.
Both Blundell and Farmer encouraged fans to follow MagicFractal’s Twitter account as a way to show support. The account currently sits at around 9,300 followers. As for what Dark Outlaw Games was developing, Blundell has confirmed that the project was not a live-service game. The project was never publicly announced and did not release before the studio closed.
Before Dark Outlaw Games, Blundell had a long run at Activision-Blizzard, where he became a key figure behind Call of Duty’s Zombies mode. He is credited with creating the Chaos storyline in the Black Ops series. In 2021, he left Activision-Blizzard to join Deviation Games, another studio that would later shut down, where he worked for just over a year before moving on to Dark Outlaw Games.
