Grand Theft Auto VI players in Japan who buy a physical code in a box will only have a limited window to use it before it stops working. According to Rockstar’s official GTA VI support page, digital download codes sold in Japan will expire 170 days after the game’s launch date of November 19, 2026. The support page lays out details on the platforms, editions, and versions of the game, and also confirms that GTA 6 can be pre-loaded starting November 12.
The expiration policy only applies to the PS5 version of the game. Xbox digital download codes are not region locked and are not affected by the same rule. Japan is currently the only region where these codes are set to expire so soon after release, and the restriction is tied to regional regulations. The news has added to frustration among some players who were already unhappy that GTA 6 will not have a disc release. Reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter, reflected that frustration.

Earlier reports had suggested a disc version might arrive after launch, but those hopes were dismissed after a report disputed the idea of a post launch physical release. A Rockstar support email also clarified that the code in a box version will remain the only physical release for the foreseeable future. Despite the lack of a disc option, GTA VI has not lost momentum ahead of release. The game reportedly has the strongest pre-order campaign on record, according to one analytics firm, and is on track to sell between 37 and 51 million copies in its first week alone.
