The Dragon Quest franchise recently marked its 40th anniversary on May 27, bringing with it a wave of commemorative merchandise ranging from plush toys and figures to something a little more premium.
One of the standout anniversary items was a hand-crafted music box that plays the iconic Dragon Quest Overture, the theme composed by the late Koichi Sugiyama that has opened every game in the series since it began. Priced at 132,000 yen (roughly $820 USD), pre-orders opened on the afternoon of June 3 and were completely sold out by the following morning, as spotted by MagMix.

The price tag drew mixed reactions from Japanese fans, with some noting it felt about ten times more than what a novelty music box would typically cost. That said, most responses leaned positive. Each unit is hand-crafted by Japanese artisans using high-quality walnut wood, making it more of a luxury collector’s piece than a standard piece of merchandise.
On the technical side, the music box features 50 notes and measures around 8 inches wide, 5 inches long, and 3 inches deep. The Dragon Quest Overture plays for approximately 1 minute and 52 seconds. Those who managed to secure a pre-order can expect their unit to ship by February 28, 2027.

For fans who missed out on the anniversary music box or simply weren’t up for the steep price, Square Enix still has a wide range of 40th anniversary merchandise available on their website, including plush toys, figures, keychains, and other collectibles at more accessible price points.
