The Pokémon community is buzzing after the reveal of Pokémon Winds and Waves, the upcoming 10th generation games set to launch sometime in 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2. For fans across Southeast Asia, though, the excitement hit a little different because this time, it looks like their part of the world is finally getting the Pokémon treatment.
While the name of the new region hasn’t been officially announced yet, the debut trailer gave fans plenty to work with. The environments shown appear to draw heavy inspiration from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and it didn’t take long for fans online to start connecting the dots.
One of the most talked-about moments was the appearance of layered rice terraces in the game world. These closely resemble the Ifugao rice terraces found in Luzon, Philippines which are ancient structures built over 2,000 years ago that are still in use today. The terraces are designed for efficient water flow and farming along mountain slopes, and they’re recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They’re even known colloquially as the “eighth wonder of the world.”

Filipino fans on Twitter were quick to react, pulling screenshots from the trailer and placing them side by side with real-life photos. The comparisons included floating bamboo houses, the striking blue-green waters along cliffsides reminiscent of Palawan, and rural housing styles common across Southeast Asia.
Streamer and content creator Sevy was among those who noticed the details early, while fellow content creator ViyaGyudon pointed out the presence of mangrove trees, a staple of tropical regions like Indonesia and Malaysia.
Okay so it’s based on the entire SEA! THATS SO COOL ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This kind of real-world inspiration isn’t new for the series. Past games have pulled from specific countries and regions, Spain for Paldea in Scarlet and Violet, Hawaii for Alola in Sun and Moon, France for Kalos in X and Y, among others. So the idea of Southeast Asia serving as the foundation for a new Pokémon region fits right in line with the franchise’s history.
