In a significant shift within PlayStation Studios, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will shut down Bluepoint Games in March 2026. The decision marks the end of the Texas-based studio less than five years after its acquisition and underscores the broader structural challenges currently facing the video game industry.
The closure was first reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed through an internal email sent to employees by Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst.
A Short Tenure Under PlayStation Studios

Bluepoint Games joined the PlayStation family in September 2021, following the critical and commercial success of its remake of Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5. The studio had previously built its reputation through high-profile remasters and remakes, including the acclaimed reimagining of Shadow of the Colossus.
After its acquisition, Bluepoint contributed as a co-development partner on God of War Ragnarök. However, the studio did not release a fully original project under Sony ownership. Reports indicate that an unannounced live service title—believed to be connected to the God of War franchise—was canceled in January 2025 after entering development in 2022.
Industry Pressures and Strategic Realignment

In his message to staff, Hulst pointed to mounting pressures within the industry. Rising development costs, slower market growth, evolving player behavior, and global economic uncertainty were cited as key factors influencing the decision. These dynamics have increasingly challenged publishers’ ability to sustain large-scale game production, particularly for ambitious AAA titles.
The closure comes despite several recent successes within PlayStation Studios. Hulst referenced strong performances from titles such as Ghost of Yōtei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Helldivers II, and MLB The Show, all of which have contributed to engagement and revenue growth for the platform.
Nevertheless, Sony’s decision suggests a strategic recalibration focused on long-term sustainability rather than short-term portfolio expansion.
What This Means for PlayStation Studios

The shutdown of Bluepoint Games reflects a broader industry trend in which major publishers are reassessing studio footprints and project pipelines. In recent years, escalating budgets and prolonged development cycles have increased financial risk, particularly amid shifting consumer spending patterns.
While Sony has stated it will attempt to place affected employees within its global studio network where possible, the closure represents another notable contraction within AAA development in 2026.

For PlayStation, the move signals tighter portfolio management and a renewed emphasis on carefully curated projects heading into fiscal year 2026. Despite the difficult news, Sony maintains that creativity, innovation, and premium player experiences remain central to the PlayStation brand’s future roadmap.
