KPop Demon Hunters creator Maggie Kang has no plans to bring her hit animated film into live action. In a recent interview with the BBC, Kang stated that a live-action version would not capture the film’s unique tone and energy.
“There are so many elements of the tone and comedy that are so suited for animation,” Kang explained. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me.”
A Global Animated Phenomenon
Since its premiere in late June, KPop Demon Hunters has become a global hit and Netflix’s most-watched movie in history. The movie’s soundtrack also made waves, topping the Billboard charts and breaking records as the first soundtrack album with four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10.
Its lead single, “Golden,” has held the No. 1 spot for eight consecutive weeks, while a sing-along theatrical release in late August earned $18 million in one weekend.
A Story Fueled by Music and Myth
Kang, who co-wrote and co-directed the film, crafted a story about a hit K-pop girl group named Huntr/x. The trio—Rumi, Zoey, and Mira—lead double lives as secret demon hunters who must face off against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, who turn out to be demons themselves.
Animation Over Live Action
Co-director Chris Appelhans echoed Kang’s stance, emphasizing that the film’s exaggerated style thrives in animation. “One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes,” he said. “Rumi can be this goofy comedian, then sing, kick, and free-fall through the sky in seconds.”
He added that while many anime have been adapted into live-action films, “they often feel a little stilted,” lacking the fluid expressiveness that animation offers.
What’s Next for the Franchise
Reports from Variety suggest that Netflix and Sony are already in talks for a sequel. Kang has expressed enthusiasm about expanding the universe through animation, teasing deeper backstories for Zoey and Mira that were left unexplored in the original film.
“This was Rumi’s story,” Kang said. “We’ve set up so much potential for the others. There’s still a lot we haven’t told.” KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix worldwide.
