Publisher and developer Square Enix, together with Artdink Corporation, has revealed new details about Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. The remake is set to launch on 30 October for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It not only revitalises the two classic RPGs with stunning HD-2D visuals but also expands their stories. Players can look forward to new scenarios, encounters, and dungeons that strengthen the ties within the iconic Erdrick Trilogy.

New Scenarios That Strengthen the Erdrick Trilogy

In this remake of Dragon Quest I, players will experience additional scenarios that build a stronger link to Dragon Quest III. The story now focuses on summoning Rubiss—the great spirit said to have created Alefgard—to save a world engulfed in darkness. Rubiss, voiced by Kelly Hotten in English and Natsuki Kimura in Japanese, offers divine guidance to those who seek to restore light to the realm.

Alongside her is the Dream-Whisperer, voiced by Yuriri Naka in English and Ayumi Tsunematsu in Japanese. She leads the faeries who are trying to bring Rubiss back to the world. During the journey, the hero must travel through dreams, follow clues, and earn the trust of the cautious faeries hidden deep within their village. These additions give players a deeper look into Alefgard’s spiritual legends while enriching the story’s emotional depth.
New Encounters That Bring the World to Life

Beyond the added storylines, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake introduces a variety of new characters and events. Players will meet Tantegel soldiers facing mysterious troubles, a mage who studies the secrets of magical keys, and dwarves who live in rugged caves and boast of their strength.
These new encounters make Alefgard feel more alive than ever. Each conversation reveals more about the people and cultures within the world. As a result, players can enjoy a more grounded and engaging narrative that feels both familiar and fresh.
Expanded Dungeons and Formidable Foes Await

Exploration has also been greatly enhanced. New dungeons have been added, offering hidden paths, treasures, and surprises that were not in the original game. Players can now find mysterious “sparkly spots” filled with items infused with nature’s power. Collecting these materials may lead to valuable discoveries.
Monsters also appear more frequently, even within towns. Some of them are powerful foes that threaten the lives of innocent villagers. Therefore, players must use courage and strategy to reclaim safety and peace throughout Alefgard. These changes make the adventure more dynamic and rewarding for explorers and storytellers alike.
A Reborn Classic for a New Generation

With Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, Square Enix and Artdink have gone beyond a simple remaster. They have reimagined two legendary titles with modern storytelling, full voice acting, and a connected world. The result is a version that respects the original games while bringing them to life for a new generation of players.
When the game arrives this October, adventurers will once again step into the world of Alefgard. Yet this time, it will be brighter, deeper, and more alive than ever before.
