Popular Mod Site Nexus Mods Changes Ownership After 24 Years

Nexus Mods, the biggest website where PC gamers download game modifications, has been sold to a new owner. The site’s creator and previous owner, known as Dark0ne, announced the sale after running the platform for 24 years.

Dark0ne decided to sell the website because managing it had become too stressful and was affecting their health. “The strain of being responsible for the behemoth I created has taken its toll,” Dark0ne wrote in a blog post. They explained that the stress caused anxiety and health problems, leading to burnout that started impacting both staff and the website itself.

The identity of the new owner hasn’t been revealed, but Dark0ne says they’re confident the site is going to good people. Finding the right buyer was important because they needed someone who truly understands the modding community and how Nexus Mods works as both a business and community hub.

“After months of meetings, face-to-face talks, and a whole lot of soul searching, I am thrilled to say that I truly believe I have found the exact right people for the task,” Dark0ne wrote. They made it clear this wasn’t a corporate buyout or quick business deal, but rather a decision to take care of their own well-being.

For users, Dark0ne says not much will change. Players and mod creators should expect the same experience, with the main difference being that Dark0ne won’t be the person making all the decisions anymore.

Nexus Mods has been incredibly successful under Dark0ne’s leadership. Last year, the site reached 10 billion mod downloads in its lifetime – a huge milestone that shows just how important the platform has become for PC gaming. The sale marks the end of an era for one of PC gaming’s most important websites
