In a recent post on Weibo, Black Myth: Wukong director Feng Ji (also known as Yocar) has officially confirmed that technical limitations of the Xbox Series S are responsible for the game’s indefinite delay on Xbox platforms. The revelation came following the game’s success at the Steam Awards, where it secured three awards including Game of the Year.
According to a translated statement, Yocar explained that the Xbox Series S’s “10G shared memory” architecture presents significant technical challenges that would require “a few years of optimization experience” to overcome. This confirmation puts to rest speculation about potential exclusive agreements with PlayStation, which had been circulating since the game’s successful launch on PlayStation 5 and PC over four months ago.
The situation adds to a growing list of developers experiencing challenges with the Xbox Series S. Notable examples include Funcom’s struggles with Dune Awakening and Larian Studios, who had to remove split-screen functionality from Baldur’s Gate 3 to accommodate the console’s limitations. A former Naughty Dog and Rocksteady developer had previously expressed strong criticism of the console’s existence.
Black Myth: Wukong joins several other prominent 2024 titles that have faced Xbox-related delays or exclusions, including Stellar Blade, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, and Silent Hill 2. However, unlike these titles, Game Science has confirmed their intention to eventually release the game on Xbox platforms once technical hurdles are overcome.
The director expressed emotional satisfaction with the game’s recent accolades while noting that an Xbox release would have made 2024 “perfect,” suggesting ongoing commitment to bringing the title to Microsoft’s platforms despite the current technical challenges.
