Sony has denied recent reports claiming that the company’s increased PS4 production was due to PS5 shortages. They state that they always intended to carry on making PlayStation 4 products into 2022.

Japanese website Nlab reported that a Sony Interactive Entrainment spokesperson told them that “It is not true that the PS4 production suspension was withdrawn due to the lack of PS5, there was no plan to end the production of PS4 at the end of last year.”

This implies that the production of more PS4 consoles will not in any way affect influence or affect the sales of the PS5.

This statement was made in response to a report written by Bloomberg earlier this month which said that Sony was pushing to produce one million new PS4 consoles into the new year due to PS5 consoles remaining increasingly scarce. This is because manufacturing a PS4 requires far less advanced chips than their modern console counterpart.

Despite being over a year since their release of the PS5, both its disk and digital version have been in short supply. These PS5 shortages have not been helped by the fact they are a popular target for scalpers to quickly snap up at retail and sell for a higher price.

That being said, the Playstation 5 has continued to sell well over this time period, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation console of all time, managing to gross over 10 million units in global sales in 284 days.
