The rare PS5 is hard to come by due to the global semiconductor shortage, but Sony revealed that they’re tackling this by making more PS4s.
Earlier today, Bloomberg confirmed that “increasing production orders by adding the cheaper-to-make PS4 would also give Sony more leeway when negotiating with manufacturing partners for a better deal.” By producing more PS4s, it will help to offset Sony’s PS5 shortage by adjusting the demand. The PS4 also uses less advanced chips, is easier to manufacture and is less costly compared to the PS5.
According to Sony, PS4 production is set to continue throughout the year and there are no plans to stop making the console. Initially, the company’s plan was to make a quick transition to the latest hardware. While the ongoing pandemic did help to make gaming more popular than ever, game development has slowed down and the demand for hardware components have skyrocketed, contributing to the elusiveness of the PS5.
On top of that slower-than-expected rate of production for the PS5, there is also the added issue that is scalpers, making it difficult for customers to get the console from authorised dealers and retailers. In Malaysia for example, PS5 scalping made national headlines when the authorities got involved to settle a dispute between two unauthorised dealers.
