After almost two decades without a new entry, the Onimusha series is finally making a comeback with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. But what took so long? According to the game’s developers, it all came down to resources.
The last main Onimusha game, Dawn of Dreams, came out in 2006. Since then, fans have been waiting for news about the series. Producer Akihito Kadowaki recently told JPGames that many people at Capcom wanted to make a new Onimusha game for years, but the company simply didn’t have enough staff to make it happen.

The problem was that Capcom was busy working on several big projects at the same time. These included Devil May Cry 5, three Monster Hunter games, Dragon’s Dogma 2, two new Resident Evil titles, and several remakes. All of these games needed large teams and took a long time to develop, which left no room for a new Onimusha project.
Things started to change around 2020. That’s when the core team members who would work on Way of the Sword finally came together. At the same time, Capcom’s RE engine had been improved enough to handle everything the developers wanted to do with the new game. With both the team and technology ready, serious development could begin.
The current development team for Way of the Sword has about 170 people working on it. Even though fans have been asking for a remaster of Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (following the success of the Onimusha 2 remaster), Kadowaki says they won’t split their team. Taking people away from Way of the Sword would hurt the game’s quality, and they don’t want to compromise on this new entry.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to release in 2026 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. After nearly 20 years, fans will finally get to experience a new chapter in the supernatural samurai series.
