Showa American Story is a post-apocalyptic action game with a setting unlike any other—zombie-filled 80s America colonised by Japan. The game will release globally on PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam.

The game puts players in the shoes of Chigusa Chōko, a 19-year-old Japanese girl who returned from the dead only to discover that the world she knew has completely changed. No longer is it brimming with life, it’s now brimming with zombies, yakuza and bōsōzoku gangs instead.

The game takes place in an alternate timeline during the 66th year of the Showa era (1926-1989), which saw rapid growth for Japan’s economy. A huge influx of Japanese immigrants arrived in America. Eventually, the blending of two very different cultures resulted in the birth of a unique landscape.

Featuring backdrops such as the Golden Gate Bridge with Japanese lanterns, ubiquitous Ksitigarbha statues, gas stations painted with Ukiyo-e, the billboard of Statue of Liberty in kimono, a fusion of Japanese and American aesthetic persists in Showa American Story It shows us an amazing world with misplaced elements mixed together.

Discovering a motorbike and an RV near the start of her journey, Chōko travels across America (or what’s left of it) as she fights against the undead. As a former stand-in for action movies, Chōko is in great physical shape, allowing her to use all sorts of weapons, melee and ranged alike.

Combat is fast-paced and intense. Not only will the player need to adapt to the obstacles and challenges posed by the doomsday, Chōko herself will grow stronger throughout the process.
