KPop Demon Hunters has cemented itself as Netflix’s biggest hit to date. According to reports, the animated phenomenon has now surpassed Red Notice to become the most-streamed movie in the platform’s history.
Since its June 20 debut, it has racked up 236 million views, beating Red Notice’s 230.9 million. It now leads Netflix’s all-time list ahead of Carry-On, Don’t Look Up, and The Adam Project.

Box Office and Streaming Records
The film has also made a strong impact in theaters. A special “singalong” version received a limited release last weekend and topped the North American box office. It earned an estimated $19.2 million, with sources suggesting global grosses between $18 and $20 million.

That makes it one of Netflix’s most successful theatrical outings. On streaming, it continued to dominate last week by drawing another 25.4 million views.
A Story That Resonates
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film was co-written with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of Huntr/x, a three-member K-pop girl group who hunt mythical monsters while selling out arenas. The story mainly follows lead singer Rumi. The voice cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo.

The soundtrack became a hit of its own. Original songs were written by Ejae, Jenna Andrews, Danny Chung, Ido, Vince, Kush, Daniel Rojas, Stephen Kirk, Lindgren, and Mark Sonnenblick. The album climbed charts worldwide and helped fuel the film’s buzz.
Critics also praised its creativity. Variety’s Peter Debruge called it “high-energy” and “high-concept.” The New York Times described the film as “charming, funny and artfully punchy.”
Sequel Already in Talks
With the film’s overwhelming success, reports confirm that Netflix and Sony are already discussing a sequel. Details remain under wraps, but it is expected that Kang will return. She first conceived the idea before teaming up with Appelhans.

Kang also hinted that the follow-up might spotlight Rumi’s fellow bandmates Zoey or Mira.
“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory … This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira,” she told Variety.
The project will need approval from both Sony and Netflix. Sony developed the film, while Netflix handled distribution. Under their 2021 deal, Netflix paid for the $100 million budget and an additional $25 million upfront. With those returns and the film’s global acclaim, fans can expect Huntr/x to return for another adventure.
