Nintendo has officially added Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance to its Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics lineup, giving modern players access to one of the franchise’s most influential entries. The game is now available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers using the Nintendo Switch 2 system, where GameCube titles are currently supported.

Originally released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube, Path of Radiance marked a major evolution for the Fire Emblem series. Developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, it was the franchise’s first home console entry in years and the first to fully transition the series into 3D visuals, full-motion cutscenes, and voice acting.

A Tactical RPG Defined by High Stakes

At its core, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance delivers the series’ signature tactical role-playing gameplay. The narrative takes place on the continent of Tellius, a land shaped by centuries of tension between the Beorc and the Laguz. The story begins when the militaristic nation of Daein invades the peaceful kingdom of Crimea. Players follow Ike, a young mercenary who becomes entangled in a war that spans the entire continent.

Unlike previous Fire Emblem protagonists, Ike does not come from royalty. His rise from mercenary to leader grounds the story in personal loss, political intrigue, and racial conflict. Alongside Princess Elincia, the rightful heir to Crimea’s throne, Ike must unite fractured nations to oppose King Ashnard of Daein and the mysterious Black Knight.

The game’s narrative earned praise for its mature themes, character development, and willingness to confront topics such as prejudice, war, and genocide.

A Landmark Entry With Lasting Legacy

Path of Radiance received strong critical reception upon release, earning an aggregate score of 85 on Metacritic. Critics praised its story, combat depth, and pacing, while some noted limitations in its graphical presentation. Despite modest sales due to its late release in the GameCube’s lifespan, the game played a key role in cementing Fire Emblem’s future on home consoles.

Its success led directly to a sequel, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, released on the Wii, and helped establish Ike as one of the series’ most iconic characters.
