The Nintendo Debut in Indonesia – What Gamers Can Expect Beyond the Console Launch

Nintendo has finally made its official entry into Indonesia, and it’s easily one of the biggest talking points in the local gaming scene right now. Our sister gaming website GamerWk was on hand at the Nintendo Business Conference Indonesia, where the company laid out its plans for entering the local market after years of Indonesian gamers relying on imported units or third-party sellers to get their hands on Nintendo hardware.

Official Launch, Distribution, and the Day-One Lineup

The headline news is that both the original Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2 will officially launch in Indonesia this December 2026. Pricing for either console has not been announced yet. What has been confirmed is who’s bringing them in: the consoles will be distributed under Nintendo Singapore, working together with PT Nusantara Interactive Niaga, a company under the Salim Group that now serves as Nintendo’s official partner in the country. In practical terms, this means Indonesian buyers will no longer have to depend entirely on imports or unofficial sellers just to get a console.

This shift matters more than it might seem at first glance. A lot of local gamers have historically held off on buying Nintendo hardware, especially with the jump to the pricier Switch 2, simply because there was no clear local pricing, no stable distribution channel, and no proper after-sales support or warranty if something went wrong. Having an official distributor in place should help ease some of that hesitation.

On the software side, Nintendo confirmed that its major game lineup will arrive in Indonesia alongside the console launch. Pokemon fans in particular have something to look forward to, as all the latest Pokemon titles are set to be made available locally, including Pokemon Winds and Waves, which will release in Indonesia on the same day as its global release. That gives local players day-and-date access to a major title for the first time. A big Zelda remake is also part of the lineup planned around the same period, so it looks like Indonesian gamers are in for a fairly packed end of the year once more details, including prices, are shared by Nintendo and the Salim Group in the coming months.

Nintendo has also launched an official Indonesian-language web portal, which marks the company’s first direct line of communication with local consumers and signals that Indonesia is now seen as a market worth investing in. That said, not everything is landing at once. The Indonesian version of the Nintendo eShop will not be available on launch day in December. Local eShop access will come later, pending a separate announcement from Nintendo.

What’s Still Unconfirmed: Pricing and Payment Options

Beyond what’s already confirmed, there are a few things gamers can watch for as this local ecosystem develops further. It’s worth being clear that Nintendo has not confirmed any of the following directly, so these remain open questions rather than set plans.

On pricing, first-party titles like Mario or Zelda will likely still follow the usual global pricing range once the local eShop is up, roughly IDR 900,000 to 1 million, though there is room for it to come in somewhat lower. Third-party and indie games stand to benefit more, since a local eShop generally gives smaller publishers more flexibility to set prices that better match local purchasing power.

Payment options are another area worth watching. Right now, buying from overseas eShops usually means using a credit card, which can run into region-blocking issues, or paying a markup for gift cards. A local eShop could open the door to more familiar payment methods like QRIS, GoPay, OVO, Dana, or ShopeePay, making it easier for buyers who don’t have a credit card. With the Salim Group involved as distributor, there’s also a chance physical eShop vouchers could show up on Indomaret shelves down the line, similar to how phone credit is sold today, and possibly even Nintendo merchandise alongside them.

Retail, Community, and a Broader Moment for Nintendo

There’s also room for Nintendo’s presence to grow into things like a dedicated pop-up or retail store for merchandise and collectibles, following a similar move the company made in Thailand, where it opened a permanent store at Siam Paragon Mall in Bangkok in partnership with Synnex Thailand and Copperwired toward the end of 2024. On the competitive side, having Nintendo and The Pokemon Company officially present in the country could also create a clearer path for local esports players to qualify for global events like the Pokemon World Championships.

None of this comes in isolation either. Nintendo’s game library has been performing well more broadly, with the company recently confirming that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has already surpassed the total sales of its original 3DS version, a sign of continued momentum behind the brand heading into this expansion.

For now, what’s confirmed is straightforward: an official console launch in December, a proper distribution and warranty setup through the Salim Group, and a day-one Pokemon release to go with it. The rest, from local eShop pricing to payment options and potential retail expansion, will depend on what Nintendo and its Indonesian partners reveal in the months ahead.
