Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, says he is working to arrange a physical edition of the game, though he could not share specifics on what that release might look like. Hamaguchi spoke about the topic during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, in an interview with GamesRadar. He explained that the team is still working out what the exact product lineup will be for Revelation, so he isn’t able to confirm details yet. He did say he is trying to make arrangements for some form of physical release to happen.
The comments come at a time when the future of physical games is being questioned across the industry. Sony previously confirmed it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Separately, Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch without a disc version, instead shipping as a code in a box. Both moves have led to speculation about whether more major publishers will move away from physical formats.
According to Hamaguchi, physical release plans depend heavily on the requirements set by each platform holder. He pointed to examples like storage limits on Nintendo’s key cards, as well as differing rules around how much content can fit on a disc for other platforms. He said these kinds of technical and company specific rules are part of what’s currently being discussed as the team decides on the best format for the game.
He added that he hopes the final result will be close to what players and fans want, but said people will need to wait for future announcements to find out more. Hamaguchi also joked that if the interview were published and physical plans later fell through, he would face backlash from fans.

Hamaguchi also spoke more broadly about the shift away from physical games. He said that as both a developer and a fan, he recognizes the general industry trend is moving toward downloadable games. Even so, he said it would be a shame if physical releases disappeared completely, pointing to moments like fans bringing games to conventions for autographs as something he considers a meaningful part of gaming culture that he hopes continues.
