Capcom has said that the games industry’s shift toward a digital future is unlikely to have a major effect on its business, since most of its games are already sold digitally.
The comment comes a month after Sony announced that physical disc games for PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028, a decision that caused a lot of debate among fans online. Xbox is also reportedly working on a disc-to-digital system that would let players convert their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X games into digital copies. This has led to speculation that Xbox’s upcoming Project Helix console could end up being digital-only as well.

While many players and retailers have raised concerns about what this shift could mean for the future of physical games, not all publishers see it as a major problem, at least in terms of how it affects their earnings.
During a Q&A session following its latest financial results, Capcom was asked what kind of impact it expects from the shrinking physical games market over the medium to long term. The company said it does not expect much of a change, since digital sales already make up the bulk of its business.
“Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital,” Capcom said in its official response. “We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.”

One example of this trend is Resident Evil Requiem, which has now sold more than 8 million copies, with most of those being digital purchases. Capcom’s confidence also lines up with its recent financial performance. The company reported another strong quarter, with both sales and profits rising compared to the same period last year. Net sales for the first quarter of its current financial year, covering April 1 to June 30, reached 70.41 billion yen (around $430 million), a 54.7% increase year-on-year. Operating profit came in at 41.05 billion yen (about $250 million), up 66.9% from the previous year.
Capcom said this growth was largely driven by strong game sales, with 23.81 million units sold during the quarter, compared to 14.16 million units sold in the same period last year.
With digital sales already forming such a large part of its business, Capcom’s outlook suggests that for some of the industry’s biggest publishers, the shift away from physical media may be less of a disruption than players and retailers fear.
