Ubisoft has confirmed that Champions Tactics, its NFT-based role-playing game, will be shutting down this October. The announcement marks the end of a title the company had branded as a Web3 competitive turn-based RPG when it launched in October 2024. Ubisoft had already begun stepping back from this system in May, telling players it intended to progressively transition away from blockchain functionality. That shift has now culminated in the decision to end the game entirely, just two years after it first launched.
The company shared the news with players through its Discord server, stating, “Today, we’re sharing an important update regarding the future of Champions Tactics. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to sunset the game. The Champions Tactics servers will officially shut down on October 30.”
“We want to sincerely thank you for your support, passion, and dedication to Champions Tactics,” the company said, noting that further details and reminders will follow as the shutdown date gets closer.
Champions Tactics let players build teams of three characters to fight opponents in turn-based battles. What set the game apart, and also drew criticism, was its Web3 setup, where each character worked essentially as an NFT that could be bought using either in-game currency or cryptocurrency. Ubisoft added that the game will stay fully playable up until that date, with the goal of letting players enjoy the experience during its remaining months. As part of the shutdown process, in-app purchases will be turned off across all platforms.
