Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has already sold more copies than its 3DS predecessor, according to Nintendo’s own sales figures, making it the best selling game in the Tomodachi series so far. In its most recent financial report, Nintendo said the game had sold 7.96 million copies by the end of the first quarter of its current fiscal year, which ended in June. The company also noted that by August 5, that number had grown to more than 8 million copies worldwide.
The Tomodachi series began with Tomodachi Collection, which launched on the Nintendo DS in 2009 but was only released in Japan. Even with that limited release, the game sold 3.2 million copies, making it the second best selling Japan only title on the DS, behind English Training. That success led Nintendo to release a sequel, Tomodachi Life, on the 3DS in 2013. Unlike the first game, this one was released internationally. It went on to sell 6.73 million copies worldwide, placing it among the top selling 3DS games of all time at number 11.
Now, with 8 million copies sold in just three and a half months, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has become the top selling entry in the series. Nintendo said the game is being enjoyed by players of all ages and genders.
Looking at the breakdown of the 7.96 million copies sold by the end of June, 2.55 million were sold in Japan while 5.39 million were sold in other regions. This is notable since the original Tomodachi Collection never left Japan, and some had doubted whether a game with so much text could succeed internationally. The series now appears to be performing strongly outside Japan as well.
With sales continuing to climb past the 8 million mark, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream stands as a clear high point for the series, both in Japan and around the world.
