The Pokémon Company and Sony have announced financial donations to help support recovery efforts in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture following a powerful earthquake that struck the region. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit on July 28, causing widespread destruction across the area. As of this writing, the death toll has reached at least 28 people, with rescue operations still underway.
The Pokémon Company confirmed it would be donating a combined 100 million yen (over $600,000 USD) to Kumamoto Prefecture, the Japanese Red Cross Society, and other relief organizations. The funds are intended to support victims of the disaster as well as groups working on restoring and rebuilding affected areas.

Sony, which operates a major semiconductor hub in Kumamoto, also announced a donation of 50 million yen in emergency aid. According to the company, the money will go toward child support efforts through the Emergency and Recovery Fund for Children, along with broader support for residents in disaster-hit areas. Sony added that it will run an internal donation matching campaign, in which the company will double any amount raised by its employees for relief efforts.
Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed the earthquake in a statement, saying, “I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to everyone affected by this earthquake. Kumamoto is a vital hub that supports the Sony Group’s operations and serves as the core of our semiconductor business. Since the establishment of the Kumamoto Technology Center in 2001, we have grown alongside the local community, supported by the people of the region. I sincerely pray for the safety of those affected and for the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction of Kumamoto.”
Sony’s Kumamoto Technology Center has also been affected by the disaster, with operations at the facility halted following the earthquake. While no casualties were reported there, the company says it is still assessing the extent of the damage. With rescue and relief work continuing in the region, both companies say their contributions are aimed at supporting immediate needs as well as the longer-term rebuilding of Kumamoto.
