Nexon’s Blue Archive is facing backlash from players after major changes to its character recruitment system were announced during the game’s 5.5th anniversary showcase. The showcase, which also introduced new content including a brand new game mode, was quickly overshadowed by anger from the community once the recruitment changes were revealed.
Blue Archive General Producer Kim Yong-ha addressed the situation in a statement posted on X on July 28, 2026, apologizing to players. Kim said the renewal of the recruitment system caused considerable anxiety and confusion among players and apologized for revealing the details only at the last minute. He also apologized for casually reposting related content on his personal social media account, saying it led to a loss of trust.

今回の生徒募集システムのリニューアルに関し、先生方に多大なる不安と困惑を与えてしまいました。

The system in question replaces Blue Archive’s long running spark mechanic. The new system instead uses a pity based structure similar to those found in other gacha games such as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Every 100 pulls give a 50 percent chance of landing a rate up character, and if that chance is lost, the character is guaranteed by the 200th pull. Once a player obtains a rate up character, however, their pity count resets back to zero.

According to Kim, the development team’s goal was to reduce the stress players feel when they are unable to get a wanted character until reaching the required points, believing that letting more players get the students they want is important for the game’s long term future. To do this, the team introduced a new system called “Call Charge,” along with a feature that lets points carry over. The studio also added a “Recruitment Count Bonus” through a limited time 10 recruitment ticket, meant to lower the amount needed to essentially guarantee a rate up character.
Kim said that despite these intentions, the changes forced players to weigh what they were gaining and losing, which added to the anxiety rather than easing it, and ultimately hurt the trust built with players over time. He said the team received many messages of concern and confusion after the announcement and admitted that preparation and communication ahead of the reveal were not sufficient. The Blue Archive Producer added that the studio would focus on providing a more stable experience going forward and be more careful and thorough in how future changes are communicated, closing the statement with another apology for the inconvenience caused.
