Final Fantasy XIV Confirms August 4 Release Date for Switch 2

Square Enix has officially announced that Final Fantasy XIV will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4. To help ease the transition for a large wave of new players, the game’s first month will be free for everyone as part of a stability test, and a free trial will also be available starting on day one. Players who already play Final Fantasy XIV on other platforms and want to continue on Switch 2 will need to get a separate Switch 2-specific subscription, as previously revealed by Square Enix. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 version are going live today, with three editions to choose from.

The FFXIV Starter Edition is priced at $19.99. The FFXIV Complete Edition is normally $59.99, though a pre-order discount brings it down to $41.99. The FFXIV Complete Collector’s Edition is priced at $139.99, with a pre-order discount lowering it to $97.99. For those looking to expand the base game, the FFXIV Dawntrail Expansion is available for $39.99, while the FFXIV Dawntrail Collector’s Edition costs $59.99. Both expansion editions require ownership of the base game. According to the eShop listing, the download size for Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 comes in at 117GB.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, the game’s most recent expansion, is already available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, macOS, and PC. Both Dawntrail and the base game will be joining Switch 2 this August. Looking further ahead, Square Enix also confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the next expansion for the game, is set to launch in January 2027. Evercold will be available across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC platforms. This expansion into new platforms comes not long after Square Enix pulled back from another version of the game, with Final Fantasy XIV Mobile shutting down in China and its planned global release scrapped altogether.
