Capcom has shared new details about Resident Evil Veronica, with producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi speaking to Video Games Chronicle about the game’s direction, its place in the series, and why the team dropped “Code” from the title.
The name change is one of the first things Hirabayashi addressed. Rather than keeping the original “Code Veronica” name, Capcom went with simply “Veronica” to bring it in line with how recent mainline entries are titled. Games like Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Requiem each use a single-word subtitle, and the team wanted this remake to follow that same pattern. More than just a naming decision though, it reflects how Capcom internally views the game. Hirabayashi told VGC that to the development team, Code Veronica is just as vital and important as any numbered entry in the series.
The remake is being developed by the same team behind the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes, and is confirmed to be a third-person game, consistent with those previous projects. Hirabayashi described the gameplay as something of a mashup of RE2’s mechanics, which makes sense given Claire Redfield returns as the lead. The story picks up just three months after the events of RE2, with Claire joined by her brother Chris and series villain Albert Wesker also set to appear.
Because the timeline sits so close to Raccoon City, Claire is not a trained operative or government agent at this point. Hirabayashi noted that while her experiences have changed her, she is not a completely different person from who players met in RE2. The remake will also dig deeper into her character, exploring sides of her that have not been shown before.

On the development approach, Hirabayashi said the team is following the same process used on previous remakes, which means collecting player feedback, identifying what made the original work, and then figuring out how to honor that while still delivering something fresh. The team has also been drawing on lessons learned from building recent titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, which broke launch records for the series earlier this year. Hirabayashi specifically pointed to game feel and usability as areas where knowledge from Requiem is being applied to Veronica.

The remake was revealed at Summer Game Fest, with a trailer showing a tense apartment scene set in Paris, a likely nod to the opening of the original 2000 game. Beyond confirming the third-person perspective, Capcom has kept most gameplay details under wraps for now.
