Square Enix has officially announced a major wave of updates for Final Fantasy XIV Online, including a brand-new expansion titled Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game, and a high-profile Evangelion collaboration.
The announcements were made during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, where Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida detailed the future direction of the long-running MMORPG.
Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold Launches January 2027
The next major expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, will launch in January 2027 and kick off the next major narrative arc known as the “Godless Realms Saga.”
The expansion continues the journey of the Warrior of Light on the Fourth, introducing new story developments, regions, and large-scale threats. A teaser trailer shown during the event offered a first look at the upcoming content and tone of the expansion.
New Jobs, Level Cap Increase, and Massive Content Update
Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will significantly expand gameplay systems and progression. Key additions include two new jobs (a tank role and a physical ranged DPS role), an increased level cap from 100 to 110, and a wide range of new content such as cities, dungeons, trials, raids, and a new Ultimate raid.
PvP updates, new gear and crafting recipes, and improvements to the Duty Support System are also planned as part of ongoing updates following launch.
Square Enix also confirmed expanded gameplay systems, including seasonal reward restructuring, an Armoury update to better support multiple jobs, and expanded character customization options.
Combat System Overhaul: Reborn and Evolved Modes
One of the biggest changes coming with Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is a major combat system overhaul introducing two distinct modes.
“Reborn Mode” will retain the current combat structure and job mechanics, while “Evolved Mode” will focus more heavily on job identity and differentiation. New jobs introduced in the expansion will only be playable through Evolved Mode, marking a significant shift in gameplay design for Final Fantasy XIV Online.
Evangelion Collaboration: Ghosts of Desire
Square Enix also revealed a major crossover alliance raid titled Evangelion: Ghosts of Desire. This collaboration brings the iconic anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion into the world of Final Fantasy XIV Online, developed in partnership with khara, Inc.
The raid series will feature narrative and visual elements inspired by the long-running anime franchise, which has influenced global creators since its debut in 1995.
Nintendo Switch 2 Version Arriving August 2026
Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu also confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV Online will launch in August 2026.
The version will include an early access period for server stability testing before full release. However, it will require a separate subscription from other platforms, though players already subscribed elsewhere will receive a 50 percent discount. Importantly, it will not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Subscription and Platform Details
Square Enix clarified that the Nintendo Switch 2 version will operate independently from existing subscription structures, while still supporting cross-platform compatibility with PC, PlayStation, and Xbox ecosystems.
The game is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
