Tencent today officially inaugurated its new office at Menara 1 Sentrum, marking a significant milestone in the company’s Malaysian growth story. The opening highlights Tencent’s strengthened long-term commitment to the local ecosystem, while leveraging Malaysia’s talent, infrastructure, and connectivity as a strategic hub for both regional and international operations.

Since entering the Malaysian market in 2013, Tencent has played an active role in shaping the country’s fast-growing digital economy, driving innovation across games and entertainment, AI, cloud computing, and financial technology. Over the past year, Tencent Malaysia doubled its workforce, employing more than 90 percent highly skilled professionals in development operations, data analysis, content compliance, and customer experience. The new office, capable of housing up to 500 staff, will serve as a cornerstone for Tencent’s expansion, enabling future growth and continued investment in local talent development.

A pre-ceremony media session where Tencent executives introduced their focus areas and shared updates on the company’s growth and initiatives in Malaysia took place before the official opening ceremony.

Judy Wong, Country Manager of Tencent Malaysia, highlighted Tencent’s journey from launching WeChat in Bahasa Malaysia in 2013 to opening the new Menara 1 Sentrum office in 2025. She noted that the new space can accommodate up to 500 employees, reflecting Tencent’s strengthened long-term commitment to nurturing local talent.

Etienne Ng, Regional Director for Southeast Asia at Weixin Pay, spoke about the platform’s rapid growth in Malaysia, which saw a 300% increase in users, far outpacing Singapore’s 21%. He emphasised localized features and mini programs that allow users to access multiple services without downloading separate apps, while giving businesses a direct channel to connect with customers and expand internationally.

Wenhui Yang, General Manager of Tencent Financial Technology for Asia Pacific, explained the integration of international payment methods within Weixin Pay. He highlighted how these efforts enable Malaysian visitors to make seamless payments in China, promote QR code adoption, expand Weixin Pay access globally, and support cross-border remittances.

Eugene Chin, Country Manager for Level Infinite and Tencent Games Malaysia, discussed Tencent’s commitment to nurturing local talent and advancing hyper-localized gaming content. He referenced collaborations such as PUBG with Monsta (bringing BoBoiBoy and Mechamato), Honor of Kings with Lee Chong Wei, and partnerships with Claz’room College for mentorship and internships, while also investing in esports talent and sustainable gaming ecosystems.

Kenneth Siow, General Manager for Singapore and Malaysia at Tencent Cloud International, showcased how Tencent Cloud drives digital transformation across sectors including gaming, retail, media, finance, and healthcare. He highlighted innovations such as AI-driven palm-scan payments and 3D AI tools to accelerate game development, while reinforcing Tencent’s focus on supporting media and content creation globally.

Estee Wong, Lead of Content Performance & Operation for WeTV (Malaysia), shared insights on localizing content through Malay subtitles and AI dubbing. She highlighted fan engagement initiatives, collaborations with universities, and support for homegrown creators and SMEs, underscoring WeTV’s role in nurturing talent and contributing to Malaysia’s creative economy.

The Menara 1 Sentrum facility will host Tencent’s Global Tech, Digital Innovation, and Customer Experience (CX) teams, centralizing critical high-value functions that contribute both to global operations and the Malaysian economy. Speaking at the launch, YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital Malaysia, praised Tencent’s expansion, stating, “Tencent’s growth in Malaysia demonstrates the strength of our digital economy and the ability of our workforce to meet the demands of leading internet companies in a deeply interconnected global environment. We welcome Tencent’s continued investment as a strategic base for talent development and global collaboration.”
