Square Enix unveiled new details about Dragon Quest VII Reimagined during Sony’s State of Play presentation, showcasing an original storyline where players reunite with Kiefer as an adult, along with the game’s stone tablet fragment collection mechanic.
Players will encounter their longtime friend Kiefer in the Rucker region of the past, where he appears noticeably older. The story involves sneaking into Rucker Castle at night to help Kiefer with his troubles while avoiding castle guards. Adult Kiefer has improved his combat abilities and will support the party using items and powerful skills during battles. The new content suggests players may have multiple chances to fight alongside him in regions beyond Rucker.
The game’s progression centers on collecting broken stone tablet fragments and assembling them like puzzles to unlock new locations. Each completed tablet opens access to a different area with unique problems to solve. Players find fragments in towns, dungeons, and by defeating powerful enemies. The fragments must be placed on matching colored pedestals inside a shrine on the protagonists’ home island.

When players solve problems at a tablet’s destination, their home world changes—new islands appear and additional areas become available to explore. The reimagined version launches worldwide on February 5, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. While keeping the original game’s core elements, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined includes streamlined progression, expanded character development, and new storylines.
