Black Myth: Wukong Claims Ultimate Game of the Year at 2024 Golden Joystick Awards

Black Myth: Wukong has secured the prestigious Ultimate Game of the Year award at the 42nd Golden Joystick Awards. Game Science, the Chinese studio behind the game has made history, not only by claiming the industry’s top honor but also by becoming the second highest-played game on Steam, amassing over 2 million concurrent players.

The action-adventure title, which also took home the award for Best Visual Design, surpassed the formidable player count previously set by Palworld earlier in the year, though remaining behind PUBG’s all-time record. Game Science’s achievement stands out even more considering they had only produced two mobile games before releasing this breakthrough console title.

Black Myth: Wukong emerged victorious from a competitive field of nominees that included anticipated titles such as Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, Helldivers 2, and Tekken 8. The awards ceremony, which saw over 12 million public votes cast across 21 categories, also celebrated other major winners. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth secured four awards, while Helldivers 2 matched that success with three public-voted awards plus the Critics’ Choice distinction.

The Golden Joystick Awards, the industry’s second-oldest gaming awards ceremony dating back to 1983, continues to be a significant predictor of gaming excellence, with the past two years’ Ultimate Game of the Year winners aligning with The Game Awards’ choices.

Team ASOBI’s Astro Bot also had a strong showing at the ceremony, earning recognition for Best Audio Design, while the studio itself was named Studio of the Year. The event featured appearances from notable industry figures including Ben Starr, Alex McKenna, Derek Slow, and Neil Newbon.
