We had the opportunity to try out Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii at Tokyo Game Show 2024, and it’s shaping up to be an intriguing blend of the familiar Yakuza-style action with a fresh pirate twist. While our hands-on time was brief due to tight scheduling, we managed to get a taste of what this swashbuckling adventure has in store for fans.

One of the highlights during our time was the chance to test drive the Dragon Kart mini-game. Think Mario Kart, but with the unmistakable RGG (Ryu Ga Gotoku) Studio flair. This addition promises to inject some lighthearted fun into the game’s pacing, offering a break from the main storyline.

Combat, a cornerstone of the Like a Dragon series, seems to have received a significant overhaul. We had the opportunity to try out two distinct fighting styles, each tied to a costume change for the protagonist, Goro Majima.

The Mad Dog style, Majima’s signature approach, allows players to summon doppelgangers and execute impressive area-of-effect attacks. One standout move involves Majima and his duplicate performing a synchronized whirlwind attack, promising to clear crowds of enemies with panache.

The new Sea Dog style transforms Majima into a pirate, complete with a costume change. This style introduces ranged attacks and a grappling hook mechanic, adding vertical gameplay elements. Players can use the hook to close distances quickly or reposition behind enemies, suggesting a more tactical approach to combat.

While our time with the game was limited, it’s clear that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is aiming to shake up the formula. The game promises to blend elements of seafaring exploration, ship customization, and crew management with the series’ trademark brawling action.
