The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy director Kazutaka Kodaka recently shared the surprising story behind one of the game’s most popular routes in an interview with Weeby Newz. What became known as the Cult of Takumi route, a dark and provocative storyline that has caught players’ attention was actually created under tight deadline pressure and with no advance planning.
According to Kodaka, the original plan for The Hundred Line was to have co-director Kotaro Uchikoshi direct all hundred of the game’s endings, while Too-Kyo Games’ writers would handle the actual writing. However, the sheer amount of content proved too much to manage. As the deadline approached, several routes hadn’t even been started yet.
With no writers available to take on the missing content, Kodaka had to step in himself. The catch? He had only about two weeks to finish them. “I’d never written without a plot before, but I didn’t have a choice. And what came out was… that,” Kodaka explained.
Before diving in, Kodaka checked with his team to see if anyone was working on what he called a “damn sexy” route. Writer Yoichiro Koizumi had been handling the game’s romantic storylines, but they weren’t particularly erotic. So Kodaka decided to fill that gap with an over-the-top, sexy narrative—initially planning for a full harem storyline.
But the route took an unexpected turn. As Kodaka wrote, the story became increasingly dark and twisted, moving far beyond his original vision. He said the darkness came from being so busy during that period, with his “dark side” emerging more and more in the writing.
The result was the Cult of Takumi route, which leans heavily into darker, almost horror-like territory. While it’s different from what Kodaka first intended, the route has resonated with players and become one of the game’s most discussed storylines—making it what the developer called a “happy accident” for Too-Kyo Games.
