Nintendo has announced a new 2D Mario platformer for the Nintendo Switch called Super Mario Bros Wonder with an all-new art style and powerups. The game will release on the 20th of October 2023.

It was revealed at the recent Nintendo Direct, you can check out the trailer below:

The game features a distinct new art style for the Mario series with an almost semi-watercolor or storybook style. It has also been confirmed that Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and even Daisy will be playable characters and that four-player co-op will also be available in the title.

Super Mario Bros Wonder will be the first 2D Super Mario game since New Super Mario Bros U for the Nintendo Wii U which was released over ten years ago back in 2012.

During the DS, Wii, and Wii U eras the New Super Mario Bros series of 2D platformers were released and while well received were also criticized for feeling too similar to each other. With that in mind, it’s great to see that after taking such a long break, the latest 2D Mario feels very much like its own unique entity.

Super Mario Bros Wonder will release for Nintendo Switch on the 20th of October 2023.
