Square Enix has confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is experiencing long loading times in certain situations, and says a fix is already being tested. The Switch 2 release launched on August 4, marking the first time the MMORPG has come to a Nintendo platform. Player reaction so far has largely been positive, though a number of players have pointed out that loading times can drag on longer than expected in specific moments during gameplay.
In a statement posted on the official Final Fantasy XIV website, Square Enix laid out exactly when the issue tends to happen. This includes when the screen fades to black during a battle phase transition, when teleporting to a different map inside an instanced duty, when reviving after being knocked out inside an instanced duty, and when using Return or a shortcut inside an instanced duty.
According to the company, the delay tends to show up when a player enters an instanced duty while many other characters are present on screen at the same time. Square Enix said its investigation traced the problem to how long it takes to reload data and clear the cache during these moments, processes needed to keep rendering stable. The loading slowdown reportedly continues for as long as the player remains inside that instance.
Square Enix said it has already optimized these processes so that data loads faster even under the same conditions, and that the updated version is currently being tested. The company said it’s working to release the update as soon as possible, alongside fixes for a few other issues, and thanked players for their patience while the fix is finalized. For now, players affected by the longer loading screens will need to wait for the promised patch, which Square Enix has not yet attached to a specific release date.
