The psychological horror of Silent Hill is ready to leave Maine behind. After the success of Silent Hill f, which transported players to Japan, series developer Motoi Okamoto is exploring the possibility of taking the franchise to new parts of the world.

A Bold Departure from Maine
For decades, Silent Hill’s haunting landscapes have been firmly rooted in America. However, Silent Hill f broke that tradition by setting the story in Japan. Critics praised this shift, with Hayes Madsen giving the game a 10/10. The Japanese setting allowed the developers to incorporate local folklore and deepen the horror experience.

Its singular protagonist, Hinako, also explored themes around gender norms, adding another layer of narrative complexity. Okamoto now sees this as an opportunity to further expand the series beyond its traditional borders.
New Cultural Inspirations
Speaking to Inverse in Los Angeles, Okamoto shared that his team has been considering multiple regions for the next title. While initially cautious, he revealed that South Korea, Central and South America, Russia, and Italy are all potential settings.

“We believe we could perhaps take similar approaches with other cultures across the globe,” Okamoto said. “In Central or South America, we could explore shamanistic beliefs. Likewise, Russia, Italy, and South Korea all have unique cultural and folkloric traditions that could inspire horror elements.”

He also highlighted his interest in magical realism, citing authors like Gabriel García Márquez and Mariana Enríquez as influences. This blend of realism and fantasy, Okamoto believes, could bring a fresh perspective to Silent Hill while remaining faithful to the series’ psychological horror roots.
Challenges Ahead

Despite the enthusiasm, Okamoto acknowledges the challenges of translating these cultures into video games. “Central and South America, for instance, do not have many development studios capable of handling an IP like Silent Hill,” he explained. “We have a lot of fascinating stories from these regions, but finding the right way to adapt them for games is still something we need to explore.”
A Global Future for Silent Hill
While exact locations remain undecided, Okamoto’s comments signal a bold new era for the franchise. After proving that Silent Hill can thrive outside of Maine, the next installment may bring players into entirely new cultural landscapes, blending folklore, horror, and magical realism in ways the series has never explored before.

Fans of Silent Hill can now look forward to a series that not only terrifies but also traverses the globe. For more updates on the game, follow their official X account.
