SEGA Unveils Gameplay for New Virtua Fighter Project, More Details Coming at TGS 2025

Virtua Fighter is officially making a comeback, with SEGA dropping the first gameplay footage of the new entry, nearly 20 years since the last mainline title. The upcoming game, currently untitled, is being developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, and will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The teaser was showcased during EVO USA 2025, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come, with a deeper showcase planned for Tokyo Game Show 2025, which kicks off on September 25.

First Gameplay Teaser Shows Smooth and Impactful Combat

SEGA released a 1-minute gameplay trailer featuring a short match between two characters, including a mysterious figure (likely Akira) and another fighter in a training stage. The combat looks buttery smooth, with highly fluid animations, responsive controls, and impactful strikes, drawing comparisons to Tekken’s precision with a hint of Mortal Kombat-style slowdown mechanics.

While the gameplay snippet is short, it sets the tone for a grounded, technical fighter, true to Virtua Fighter’s roots, with enhanced visual fidelity and modern fighting mechanics.

While SEGA is still keeping details close to the chest, it is confirmed that the game will be available for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Wolf Hawkfield will return in the game.

The project still lacks an official name or launch window, but excitement is steadily building among fans of the franchise and fighting games in general.

Legacy of Virtua Fighter

First launched in 1993, Virtua Fighter pioneered 3D fighting games with its revolutionary graphics and emphasis on skill-based gameplay. Over the years, the franchise has remained a staple in the competitive scene despite long gaps between major releases.

The most recent entry, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., is currently available on Steam, and an updated version titled Virtua Fighter 5: World Stage is set to release this October 2025.

SEGA has confirmed that more information and extended gameplay will be shared at Tokyo Game Show 2025, so fans won’t have to wait long for a deeper look at the next evolution of Virtua Fighter.
