Paramount Confirms Fifth Sonic the Hedgehog Movie, Set for 2028

Paramount Pictures is expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with a fifth movie, currently untitled. The studio plans to release it on December 22, 2028, and describes it as a “Sonic Universe feature.” This suggests it could explore a spin-off storyline.

A New Sonic Adventure on the Horizon

The announcement comes after the upcoming fourth Sonic movie, scheduled for March 19, 2027, about 18 months earlier. Because the franchise has performed exceptionally well, Paramount is eager to continue growing Sonic’s cinematic universe.

Moreover, the “Sonic Universe feature” label hints that the film may introduce new characters or focus on stories outside the main narrative. Fans will likely see fresh settings and plotlines in this spin-off.

Sonic’s Box Office Dominance

The Sonic movies have dominated the global box office. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released last December, earned over $1 billion, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. By comparison, the original Sonic the Hedgehog earned $319.7 million in February 2020 despite pandemic restrictions. Its sequel, released in April 2022, grossed $319 million worldwide.

Director Jeff Fowler led all three films, while Jim Carrey returned as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz voiced Sonic. Furthermore, Carrey recently confirmed he is open to reprising his role, which could excite fans about recurring characters in the new spin-off.
