Yuji Nakao, the producer and director of the upcoming NINJA GAIDEN 4, has shared new details about the game’s development in a recent blog post. Nakao, who previously worked on Bayonetta 3 and The Wonderful 101: Remastered at PlatinumGames, expressed his excitement about working on the latest entry in the ninja action series.
The game is being developed through a collaboration between PlatinumGames, Xbox Game Studios, and Team NINJA of Koei Tecmo. Nakao, who describes himself as a huge NINJA GAIDEN fan, has played almost every game in the series, including spin-offs like Dragon Sword.
The latest trailer shows Yakumo, the game’s new main character, using a fourth weapon and includes more story clips. Yakumo will have access to a “Bloodraven Form” ability, while returning character Ryu gets a “Gleam Form.” These new combat elements are taught by a character named Tyran and offer various combat uses, from attack cancels to special maneuvers.
Despite these flashy new additions, Nakao emphasized that the development team has stayed faithful to the core NINJA GAIDEN experience. Many classic techniques from previous games have been included, such as shuriken cancels and Flying Swallow links from Wind Run, with some slight adjustments to match the new game’s combat pace.

The producer stressed that while PlatinumGames has added their own style of action gameplay, they have carefully preserved what makes NINJA GAIDEN special. The new Bloodraven Form may look very dynamic and flashy, but it’s designed to enhance the deep combat mechanics the series is known for. For newcomers to the series, Nakao explained that NINJA GAIDEN games have always featured deep mechanics that feel rewarding to play. The new Bloodraven Form allows players to perform flashy attacks and combos that are more intuitive than they might appear.
